Guidance and counselling are important for children and go hand-in-hand, and institutions have a significant role in bringing out the best in young individuals. Good behaviour is desirable, but sometimes learners need someone to guide them to build their personality. Through counselling, learners are provided advice on the ways to accomplishtheir career goals as well as handle emotional and personal issues.
Counselling in institutions is mainly of two major types.

Let’s have look at academic guidance.
Counselling and guidance, often referred to as psychological and pedagogical care and support, offered to learners in schools and other educational institutions entails:
- Evaluating students’ individual developmental and academic needs along with psychological and physical abilities, and environmental aspects, which impact their functioning in anearly education environment, school or educational institution;
- Addressing the needs identified i.e. evaluating the learners’ and young people’s individual developmental needs which is one of the main duties of educators and experts working with them.
Whereas, psychological counselling provided in a school education system, focuses on dealing with learning and academic problems and the ways to develop educational skills, emotional strength and how to deal with mental conflicts. It is directed at children, young people, parents and teachers by expert, certified professionals with efficient student counselling techniques. Provided in schools and institutions attended by children and young people alike, it can also be availed in counselling and guidance centres.
Proper counselling strategies in both the types help incorporate valuable lessons in a learner’s daily life. Sessions involve career guidance, where students are guided to rightly select or choose courses and career paths according to their set targets and potential. It's crucial to prepare them for a life after school and for various expectations in the diverse fields that they might opt for.

Counselling provides a deeper meaning to learning beyond classroom, there are loads of benefits that students get from effective guidance & counselling. This is an area where an institution provides counselling and guidance, often referred to as psychological and pedagogical support that is offered to children and young people. It is also offered to learners’ parents and teachers in various forms such as counselling or guidance sessions, workshops and training sessions.
Courses for child counselling equips educators with adetailed knowledge base regarding recognising a learner’s strengths and weaknesses, polish their interests and provide them with apt career options to achieve explore their dreams. A recent report in India Today said that about 85% of learners have no inkling about which career options to pick for their higher education. This is an indication that there is a dearth of School Counselling jobs and coming years will see a rise in counsellor recruitment in global institutions.
Parents are often unaware of the notion that it is also important to understand the interests of their child as well, and here the educator cum counsellor plays a vital role in guiding both the student and their parents in opting the right stream or field which is totally dependent on self-assessment.With vast career options, educators need to prepare students in accordance with recent trends, present developments in various streams, global demands and financial prospectus while giving priority to the child’s interests.
Counselling at an early stage opens the doors of communication thus making learners familiar with the significance of opting for the right career path. A regular session entails listening to the child and providing him/her with suggestions.
Institutions need to provide students with educational counselling during their senior years of school when they are to take some important decisions of their life.
