The duty of a school counsellor is no more limited to just setting up student schedule and administering placement and academic evaluation tests. They are considered as a crucial part of educational leadership who can create a huge impact on the acceleration and the enhancement of learning. There is no doubt that in order to be an effective counsellor, they should possess certain skills and also enjoy the process of providing help and guidance to students. A counsellor should have the capability to negotiate, share their ideas with others and convince them that they are worthwhile as well as collaborate with principals and other school officials.


Among few of the attributes required to be an effective counsellor, having excellent communication skills is one. A school counsellor must be able to communicate ideas and thoughts verbally and in a convincing manner.  Although some of these skills can be enhanced and refined through professional training or over the course of your career, you must have good communication skills before embarking on a counseling career.  Moreover, counselors should also develop a natural ability of listening and clearly explaining and communicating their ideas and thoughts to others. The first thing that comes to mind when you talk about school counselors is their ability to listen to the students, their parents and teachers. A large amount of a counselor’s time is spent on listening and processing the information given to her by others. It is one of the most important traits that you can find in a school counsellor and these traits are important because they directly make an impact on a lot of individuals.
