Role of 21st Century Teacher as a Disciplinarian

The word discipline somewhat appears negative. However, the goal of using discipline remains to teach learners about the boundaries and limits to help them achieve personal, academic and practical life goals. Discipline happens to be one of the basic requirements for a successful teaching learning process and also is often the subject of concern for teachers. Discipline is seen as a way to mould or shape the behaviour of a child to make him/her aware of the acceptable behaviour. Teaching professionals or educators play a very important role in the classroom as disciplinarians.


Teachers or school counsellors often provide psychological or behavioural advice to maintain good discipline within an institution. This role of a teacher, as a disciplinarian, plays an important role in evaluating the emotional aspect and disorderly behaviour of the learners. Globally, school counselling is considered an essential service in discipline management, without which it would be difficult for any society to function properly. Courses for child counselling or for providing school guidance have, therefore, been introduced to aid learners in overcoming the challenges they face at home or school.


Teachers have the ability to create environments in which he/she uses discipline to ensure that a particular routine is maintained and students follow rules set out by the institution. It is a way to ensure that they are in a safe learning environment. It is actually a vast aspect wherein the chief aim remains to create an environment fit for facilitating students to learn to control their own behaviour. Rules are aptly set and misbehaviours and actions properly dealt with by citing examples of a child’s own behaviour instead of punishments, control and intimidation.


When students have freedom of choice, shared control and the chance to learn to manage their actions, a community forms that is caring, encouraging, and learner friendly. It is at this point, when discipline becomes the result of a long-term practice.
