How Can A Proper Routine Help Students Combat Exam Stress And Anxiety?
1st October 2021
In the weeks right after examination season, stress relief for students can be of great use when trying to keep students awake in class. The main reason can be that they’re often exhausted due to anxiety over their upcoming exams. So, it’s no surprise when you find your students are in a daze during class, and sometimes, dozing off as well.
This kind of situation is often frustrating for the teachers as well as the helpless students. Luckily, we have found a few tried and tested ways to help perk up the students and promote a stress-free test time.
Here are a few simple ways to help students cope with stress that most teachers pursuing courses for child counseling will know.
Routines Promote Stress Relief for Students
Students without routines, quickly become overwhelmed, and of course, stressed (and tired).
Routines are basically structures that help students have a sorted day. It becomes easier for them to shift from one task/activity to the other when their days are more structured and sorted.
Hence, without feeling overwhelmed and distracted, students can focus on the activity at hand, before moving onto the next one, because they know there’s time for everything during the day. The use of study planner is a great visual help for those who need that hourly reminder.
Routines, like bedtimes, enable students to get the pace and predictability during their day. Thus, you can say that even if their minds remain busy, their bodies will adapt to a routine.
In other words, routines help students accomplish everything they need to during the day, so their minds are calm and ready for sleep at night and not worrying about stuffs that they could not do.
Unplugging from the Feed
It is quite natural that social media, and phones, are distracting, especially for a developing brain. Therefore, children can benefit from unplugging from their phones and social media well before bedtime.
However, it’s easier said than done, right?
The trick is to make the “wind-down” time fun and relaxing so that children want to keep to their newly created routines and stress-relieving activities.
Mindfulness Activities Relieve Student Stress
During stress and worry for an upcoming test, mindfulness activities can help them overcome their discomfort.
Mindfulness activities help bring students back to the present moment rather than wasting time worrying about the future.
Practicing meditation or simply focusing on their breath, calm their mind and can help them get back to reality and lessen their anxieties resulting in less stress and restful sleep.
Journaling for Student Stress Relief
Assigning tasks for students at the end of their day, like journaling, can help trigger the body to know it’s time to wind down for the day.
Journals that promote reflection, help students clear their minds and facilitate a good night’s sleep.
If you have students who suffer from anxiety, keeping journals can help them focus on specific things (like what they can control).
Teachers who are well-aware of student counselling techniques possess expert knowledge and are well-acquainted with these tips to help their students overcome test anxiety.
